South Laurel had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 6.5 runs) and they went ahead and made it three on Thursday. They were the clear victors by a 10-3 margin over the Madison Southern Eagles. Considering the Cardinals have won 19 matches by more than five runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.
Kenzie Williams made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 11 batters over seven innings while giving up three earned runs off six hits (and only one walk). She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 13 consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-5 with three RBI and two doubles. South Laurel pushed their record up to 25-5 with the win, which was their fifth straight on the road. Those road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.2 runs over those games. As for Madison Southern, they have been struggling recently as they've lost five of their last six games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 12-13 record this season.
South Laurel and Madison Southern should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps Kentucky Rankings. The Cardinals (ranked 33rd) will meet Clay County (ranked 119th) at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Madison Southern will challenge Berea at 6:00 p.m. on Monday with a big rank advantage (81 vs. 206).
