High school baseball rankings: Five MaxPreps Top 25 teams set to battle in Louisiana Division 1 state playoffs

St. Mary's Prep keeps 78-game win streak alive after tie game suspended until May 6.

The nation's longest high school baseball win streak nearly came to an end on Friday but St. Mary's Prep (Orchard Lake, Mich.) caught a break when its tie game with Brother Rice (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) was suspended until a later date.

After defeating the Warriors 8-0 in the first game of their league doubleheader, the Eaglets – ranked No. 4 in this week's MaxPreps Top 25 – found themselves tied with Brother Rice in the sixth inning of the second game.

According to St. Mary's Prep coach Matt Petry, since the game is a league contest, it was suspended in the sixth inning and will be resumed prior to the Eaglets' doubleheader at Brother Rice on May 6. So instead of St. Mary's Prep's winning streak coming to an end at 78 games in a row, it will have to wait two weeks to resolve the tie. The Eaglets won two more games over the weekend to up their win streak to 80 in a row.

Should St. Mary's Prep play and win the remainder of its schedule leading up to the resumption of the Brother Rice game, the Eaglets' would have 88 wins in a row and would need to win the resumption of the tied game in order to match the national record for consecutive wins at 89 in a row, set by Portsmouth (N.H.).

Meanwhile, it's playoff season in several Southern states as Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas all begin postseason play in the next two weeks.

The Louisiana Division 1 bracket is of particular interest since five teams from the MaxPreps Top 25 – No. 3 Barbe (Lake Charles), No. 6 Catholic-B.R. (Baton Rouge), No. 11 Sulphur, No. 16 West Monroe and No. 17 Sam Houston (Lake Charles) – all advanced to the regionals. Defending champion West Monroe is the No. 1 seed in the tournament while Barbe is No. 2.

Two games of note that won't be played include a matchup between IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) and Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.) and the Boras Classic championship game between Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) and Cardinal Newman (Santa Rosa, Calif.).

IMG Academy was scheduled to play Montverde Academy in a game between two MaxPreps Top 25 teams last week, but the Eagles did not show for the game, according to IMG officials. The game has not gone down as a forfeit on either teams' MaxPreps schedule. Montverde Academy dropped out of the rankings this week due to a loss against Trinity Christian Academy (Lake Worth, Fla.).

Cardinal Newman has been declared the winner of the Boras Classic after Notre Dame was unable to fit the championship game into their schedule.

Game of the Week: Reagan (San Antonio, Texas) def. Johnson (San Antonio, Texas), 6-5. In a battle between two of the top teams in San Antonio, Reagan won on an error in the bottom of the ninth to knock off Johnson. The two teams are now tied atop the District 28-6A standings at 13-1 with Reagan moving into this week's Top 25.

Player of the Week: Easton Shelton of Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nev.) had another huge week with four home runs and 12 RBI.

Game to watch: IMG Academy vs. Jesuit (Tampa, Fla.). The first meeting nearly produced an upset of the No. 1 team of the nation as IMG rallied from three runs down in the bottom of the seventh.

Streaks: St. Mary's Prep added three more wins to its streak, upping it to 80 in a row. The Eaglets did tie Brother Rice (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) in the second game of a doubleheader but the game was suspended and will be made up on May 6.
