Softball Recap: Benson Comes Up Short

Benson had lost four straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Thursday they dropped down to 1-7 to make it five. They came up short against the Santa Cruz Valley Dust Devils, falling 10-2. The Bobcats were not able to make up for their defeat to the Dust Devils from their previous meeting back in April of 2025.

Benson saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Maddison Ogilvie, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base and one run. Millie Kellogg also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.

As for Santa Cruz Valley, their victory bumped their record up to 4-2. Considering they have won four games by more than seven runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.

On Santa Cruz Valley's side, Alyssa Flores spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned runs on seven hits and racked up ten Ks.

At the plate, Santa Cruz Valley got a big performance out of Audrina Reyes, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI, one run, and one double. That's the most hits Reyes has posted since back in April of 2025. Another player making a difference was Gabriela Ibarra, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with two runs and two RBI.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Benson will challenge Valley Union at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. The Blue Devils have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 15.5 runs per game on average), something the Bobcats will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Santa Cruz Valley, they will face off against Gilbert Classical Academy at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. The Spartans have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 19 runs per game on average), something the Dust Devils will no doubt try to take advantage of.
