Baseball Recap: Hawaii Prep Starts Season with Defeat at Home

Hawaii Prep unfortunately couldn't capitalize on their home-field advantage in their season opener. They fell just short of the Pahoa Daggers by a score of 12-10 on Saturday. The defeat continues a trend for the Ka Makani in their matchups with the Daggers: they've now lost five in a row.

Nishiki Iwai was huge no matter where he played even without the win. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. What's more, he also racked up zero earned runs, the fewest he's had since back in March of 2024. He was even better at the plate, scoring three runs and stealing two bases while going 3-for-5.

In other batting news, Kamea Leleiwi was cooking despite his team's loss, getting on base in five of his six plate appearances with two RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Ed Lustik, who scored a run while getting on base in five of his six plate appearances.

Hawaii Prep has already played their next contest, a 6-2 loss against Kealakehe on the 22nd. As for Pahoa, they will have some time to savor their victory since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Hawaii Prep at 3:00 p.m. on March 7th.
