Softball Recap: Meridian Picks Up Fifth Straight Win on the Road

Meridian had won five straight on the road, but on Thursday they bumped their record up to 24-6 to make it six. They came out on top against the Nokomis Redskins by a score of 5-1. The Hawks haven't had any issues with the Redskins recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive win against them.

Ashley Schelling spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on five hits and racked up nine Ks. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in 11 consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Emma Childers, who went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases and one run. That's the most hits she has posted since back in April. The team also got some help courtesy of Shelby Renfro, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.

As for Nokomis, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost eight of their last nine matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 4-18 record this season. Their loss continues a trend for the squad, making it four in a row.

On Nokomis' side, they also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Jayde Gonet gave up four earned (and one unearned) runs on seven hits.

At the plate, Camryn Engelman made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and got on base in three of her four plate appearances with one triple and one run.

Coming up, Meridian will head out on the road to face off against Mt. Zion at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. The Hawks' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Braves have averaged an impressive 7.3 runs per game this season. Nokomis does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
