Baseball Game Preview: Fremont Packers vs. Mason County Central Spartans

The Fremont Packers will square off against the Mason County Central Spartans at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday. Both teams took a loss in their last game, so they'll have plenty of motivation to get the 'W'.

Fremont blew Ludington out of the water the last time the pair played, but on Tuesday Ludington got their revenge. The Packers fell just short of the Orioles by a score of 4-2. Having soared to a lofty 16 runs in the game before, the Packers couldn't push the score so high this time.

Fremont got a good showing from Owen Vanderstelt, who pitched three innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off one hit. What's more, Vanderstelt gave up only one walk, the fewest he's had since back in May of 2024.

At the plate, Fremont saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Mason Sparks, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one run.

Meanwhile, Mason County Central came up short against Montague on Monday and fell 6-3. The loss continues a trend for the Spartans in their meetings with the Wildcats: they've now lost three in a row.

Fremont has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 5-7 record this season. Those defeats can't be blamed on the team's hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 6.3 runs over those games. As for Mason County Central, their loss dropped their record down to 7-5.
