Softball Game Preview: Hertford County Bears vs. First Flight Nighthawks

Hertford County is 2-8 against First Flight since April of 2018 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Bears will be playing in front of their home fans against the Nighthawks at 5:00 p.m. Hertford County has given up an average of 16.7 runs per game this season, but Friday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Hertford County is headed into Friday's contest looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their sixth straight game on Wednesday. They came up short against Ridgecroft, falling 18-0.

Meanwhile, there's no place like home for First Flight, who bounced back after a loss on the road last Tuesday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Camden County on Friday, sneaking past 6-4. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Nighthawks have posted since April 23, 2024.

Riley Gilreath spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and three unearned) runs on six hits and racked up seven Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one walk in six consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Schuyler Wilson was excellent, scoring two runs while going 2-for-3. That's the most hits she has posted since back in April of 2024. Mamie Kyger was another key player, going 1-for-3 with three RBI and one double.

First Flight now has a winning record of 4-3. As for Hertford County, their loss dropped their record down to 1-10.
