Softball Preview: Newton Falls Tigers vs. Brookfield Warriors

Newton Falls and Brookfield are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2017, but likely not for long. The Newton Falls Tigers will head out on the road to face off against the Brookfield Warriors at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. Newton Falls is no doubt hoping to put an end to a four-game streak of away losses.

On Saturday, Newton Falls made easy work of Lordstown and carried off a 14-2 win.

Kylee Lance was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she pitched five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off five hits. Lance was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and a double.

In other batting news, Newton Falls got a massive performance out of Kirra Howard, who went 3-for-4 with a home run, three runs, and a triple. Abby Wolford was another key contributor, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-3.

Meanwhile, Brookfield fought the good fight in their extra-innings match against Harding on Saturday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell 9-6 to the Raiders. Brookfield has now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Like Newton Falls, Brookfield also got a great game from a two-way player: Madison Obermiyer. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 14 batters over nine innings while giving up six earned (and three unearned) runs off 14 hits. Obermiyer was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 1-for-4.

In other batting news, Jasmine Hubbard made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and scored two runs while going 2-for-4. Another player making a difference was Arianna Jones, who went 1-for-4 with a stolen base, a double, and an RBI.

Even though they lost, Brookfield didn't let batters stay on the plate for long and finished the game with 14 strikeouts. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Harding only tossed five.

Newton Falls' victory bumped their record up to 3-10. As for Brookfield, their record is now 2-8.
