Volleyball Game Preview: St. Xavier Bombers vs. Mt. Vernon Yellowjackets

The St. Xavier Bombers will challenge the Mt. Vernon Yellowjackets at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. Both come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

St. Xavier is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Ohio's top teams: Archbishop Moeller, who was ranked 16th at the time (St. Xavier was ranked second). The Bombers blew past the Fighting Crusaders 3-0 on Friday. The win continues a trend for the Bombers in their matchups with the Fighting Crusaders: they've now won five in a row.

St. Xavier was especially dominant in the second set. The match finished with set scores of 25-17, 25-14, 25-18.

Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Mt. Vernon, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Saturday. They skirted past St. Charles 3-2.

Mt. Vernon was actually outscored in aggregate across those five sets (103-99), but they still managed to win. Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 22-25, 25-18, 25-22, 12-25, 15-13.

Mt. Vernon's victory bumped their record up to 4-6. As for St. Xavier, they pushed their record up to 7-1 with the win, which was their 12th straight at home dating back to last season.

St. Xavier took their victory against Mt. Vernon when the teams last played back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 3-0 score. Will the Bombers repeat their success, or do the Yellowjackets have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
