Softball Recap: Southern Takes a Loss

Southern dropped their record down to 6-7 on Monday, which also ended the team's three-game streak of wins on the road. They came up short against the Columbiana Clippers, falling 12-2. The match marked the Indians' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.

Raelea Carosiello made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-3 with one home run.

As for Columbiana, they are on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last ten games. That's provided a nice bump to their 14-5 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.5 runs on average over those games.

On Columbiana's side, Addison Brode and Caitlynn Pleska were major factors while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Brode struck out eight batters over five innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits. Meanwhile, Pleska pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances. At the plate, Brode went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI, while Pleska went 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.

In other batting news, Maryn Hepler was a standout: she went 3-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and two doubles. Those two doubles gave her a new career-high. Landry Smith was another key player, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with two stolen bases and three runs.

Looking ahead, Southern is taking a road trip to face off against East Palestine at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Columbiana will be paying especially close attention to the Indians' matchup: after the Indians face off against the Bulldogs, they'll take on Columbiana again at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
