Football Preview: Nixon-Smiley Mustangs vs. Cotulla Cowboys

After each having a week off, the Nixon-Smiley Mustangs and the Cotulla Cowboys will shake off the cobwebs and take on one another at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Both are strolling into their contests after big wins in their previous games.

Nixon-Smiley will bounce into Friday's match after beating Flatonia, who they hadn't topped in three consecutive meetings. Nixon-Smiley simply couldn't be stopped last Friday as they easily beat Flatonia 43-14 on the road. The game was all but wrapped up at the end of the third, by which point the Mustangs had established a 22 point advantage.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Nixon-Smiley to victory, but perhaps none more so than Aiden Flores, who rushed for 131 yards and a touchdown on only 11 carries. The dominant performance gave Flores a new career-high in rushing yards. Another back making a difference was Julian Amaya, who rushed for 117 yards and a touchdown on only 15 carries.

Meanwhile, everything came up roses for Cotulla at home against Pearsall last Friday as the team secured a 41-6 victory. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Cowboys.

Jose Gonzalez had a dynamite game for Cotulla, rushing for 133 yards and two touchdowns on only six carries. The team also got some help courtesy of Alex Medina, who rushed for 77 yards and a touchdown on only nine carries.

Nixon-Smiley's first win this season bumped their record up to 1-2. As for Cotulla, they now have a winning record of 2-1.
