Miami had lost 11 games straight , but after bumping their record up to 2-13 on Tuesday that streak is in the rearview. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Ray Bearcats, sneaking past 13-11. The Vandals' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
Ethan Guthrey was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He pitched seven innings while giving up four earned (and six unearned) runs off nine hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one walk in four consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-5 with two RBI. That's the most hits he has posted since back in March of 2024.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Cooper Gore, who got on base in five of his six plate appearances with three runs, two doubles, and two RBI. Those doubles were his first of the season. Another player making a difference was Nathan Madrid, who got on base in five of his six plate appearances with three runs, two RBI, and one double.
Miami kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.
As for Ray, they have been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last seven matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-12-1 record this season. Even though they lost, their still made a splash at the plate and bumped their average scoring up to 6.2 runs per game (they're now ranked -1th in scoring overall).
On Ray's side, James Ruiz made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-5 with two stolen bases, four RBI, and two runs. The Bearcats are 3-1 when Ruiz posts two or more runs, but 3-11-1 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of John Beede, who went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.
Miami has already played their next game, a 13-0 defeat against Pima on the 11th. As for Ray, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next contest, a 20-1 victory against Patagonia on the 10th.
