El Modena (Orange, Calif.) and
Kennedy (La Palma, Calif.) both tightened up defensively, but El Modena managed to score enough to pull out the 13-7 victory.
The Vanguards scored on two rushing touchdowns to pull out the win.
After taking the lead on a rushing touchdown, the Fighting Irish went into halftime with a 7-0 lead. El Modena took the lead to win the game on a touchdown run in the third quarter.
The final outcome was shocking, as EM was ranked No. 540 in the MaxPreps Freeman Rankings for California, far below Kennedy's spot at No. 448.
Kennedy's only touchdown came on a 6-yard run in the second quarter.
The victory was a step in the right direction for the Orange school, which was coming off a 47-21 defeat at the hands of Cypress in its previous game. The loss comes after Kennedy defeated Northwood 23-20 last week. The victory ended El Modena's two-game losing streak.
El Modena (1-2) goes up against Northwood in a non-conference game matchup next week, while Kennedy (1-2) locks horns with Magnolia also in a non-conference game.
