Basketball Recap: Telfair County Piles Up the Points Against Wheeler County

A well-balanced attack led Telfair County over Wheeler County in every quarter on their way to victory on Saturday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that the Telfair County Trojans blew the Wheeler County Bulldogs out of the water with a 64-35 final score. Given the Trojans' advantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 99th, while the Bulldogs are ranked 488th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Leading Telfair County to victory were Passion Clay and Jada Batten. Clay posted 16 points along with eight rebounds and seven steals, while Batten dropped a double-double on 11 points and ten boards. That's the most rebounds Batten has posted since back in February of 2024. Aamoni Posley was another key player, putting up 11 points along with eight rebounds and four steals.

Telfair County was working as a unit and finished the game with 14 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Wheeler County only posted six assists.

Justise Dubose and Nikita James certainly did their best on Saturday to avoid the loss. Dubose put up eight points and eight boards, while James went 6 of 14 on her way to 16 points in addition to six rebounds and five steals. That was a full 45.7% of Wheeler County's points, marking the seventh time in a row she's had more than a third of the team's points.

Telfair County's victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 11-1. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 59.0 points per game. As for Wheeler County, they are on a six-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-10.

Telfair County will head out to square off against Appling County at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Telfair County knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past four games -- so hopefully Appling County likes a good challenge. As for Wheeler County, they will take on Wilcox County at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Wilcox County will roll in looking for their tenth straight win, something Wheeler County surely won't give up without a fight.
