Softball Game Preview: Los Lunas Tigers vs. West Mesa Mustangs

The Los Lunas Tigers will take on the West Mesa Mustangs at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. The two teams were dealt some close losses in their previous games and are determined not to let this one get away.

Los Lunas is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of New Mexico's top teams: Atrisco Heritage Academy, who was ranked 19th at the time (Los Lunas was ranked ninth). The Tigers fell just short of the Jaguars by a score of 6-4 on Tuesday. The Tigers' loss signaled the end of their three-game winning streak.

Kelsie DeGraaf was cooking despite her team's loss, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-3. The team also got some help courtesy of Grace Baca, who scored a run while going 1-for-2.

Meanwhile, West Mesa suffered their closest defeat since May 4, 2024 on Saturday. They fell just short of Portales by a score of 10-8.

Mya Baca led a balanced group of hitters, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. Lea Reza also deserves some recognition as she hit her first triple of the season.

West Mesa's loss dropped their record down to 7-9. As for Los Lunas, they suffered their first home defeat, dropping their record down to 11-6.

Los Lunas took their win against West Mesa when the teams last played back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 11-1 score. Do the Tigers have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Mustangs turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
