Baseball Recap: Mattoon Makes It Five in a Row at Home

Mattoon entered their tilt with Charleston on Monday with two consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with three. They came within a single run of losing the streak, but they secured a 5-4 W against the Trojans. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 12-8 on Monday.

Madden Johnson made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out nine batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off five hits. That's the most strikeouts he has posted since back in April of 2024. He was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing a base while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. He also put up a double, which was his first of the season.

In other batting news, Kael Alexander was excellent, going 1-for-3 with one triple and one run. That triple was his first of the season.

Mattoon pushed their record up to 8-3 with the victory, which was their fifth straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.6 runs on average over those games. As for Charleston, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-5.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Mattoon will venture away from home to challenge St. Anthony at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Greenwave's pitchers better be ready for this one: the Bulldogs have averaged an impressive 7 runs per game this season. As for Charleston, they will head out to face off against Neoga at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
