Basketball Recap: Sierra Starr Key Part of a Team Effort in Bulldogs Win

Sparta won the last time they faced New Athens and things went their way on Monday too. The Sparta Bulldogs strolled past the New Athens Yellow Jackets with points to spare, taking the game 59-43. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Bulldogs.

Sparta's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Sierra Starr led the charge by going 7 of 14 on her way to 16 points and seven boards. Another player making a difference was Maddie Schulein, who went 5 for 11 en route to 14 points.

New Athens lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Brooke Deterding, who posted 13 points in addition to eight rebounds and six steals. That's the most boards Deterding has posted since back in November of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Mallory Kohnen, who scored four points along with ten rebounds and three blocks.

Sparta's win bumped their record up to 7-11. As for New Athens, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 3-13.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Sparta has already played their next match (against Carlyle), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. New Athens has also has no score uploaded for their next contest, this one against Steeleville.
