Softball Recap: Hillsboro Hiltoppers vs. Staunton Bulldogs
Hillsboro had lost six straight on the road, but on Monday they dropped their record down to 7-12 to make it seven. They fell 6-1 to the Staunton Bulldogs. The Hiltoppers were not able to make up for their loss to the Bulldogs from their previous meeting back in April of 2024.
Peyton Chappelear was cooking despite her team's loss, going 1-for-3 with one home run.
As for Staunton, they are on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last nine contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 17-3 record this season. The win was nothing new for Staunton as they're now sitting on three straight.
On Staunton's side, Grace Burris spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on two hits and racked up seven Ks. Burris has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Staunton let Lilly Bandy and Korryn Keehner run wild. Bandy went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and two runs, while Keehner went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one double. That's the most stolen bases Bandy has posted since back in March.
We've got plenty of inter-conference action coming up soon. Hillsboro is set to square off against their familiar foe Litchfield at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Staunton will face off against rival Southwestern at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Bulldogs 1.9, the Piasa Birds 3.9) so any runs scored will be well earned.
