Baseball Recap: Broughton Takes a Loss

Broughton extended their losing streak to three on Thursday, dropping their season record down to 10-8 in the process. They fell 9-5 to the Cardinal Gibbons Crusaders. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Crusaders this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 6-0 on Tuesday.

Sam Harris was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he struck out eight batters over seven innings while giving up four earned (and one unearned) runs off seven hits. He has been consistent: he hasn't tossed less than eight strikeouts in seven consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Matthew Vannoy and Garrett Waters stepped up to the plate in a big way. Vannoy went 2-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI, while Waters went 3-for-4 with two doubles and one RBI.

As for Cardinal Gibbons, the win (which was their ninth in a row) raised their record to 15-5. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games.

On Cardinal Gibbons' side, they got a great performance from Max Boyatt as he struck out eight batters over 5.1 innings while giving up three earned runs off five hits (and only one walk).

At the plate, Damon Phillips was incredible, going 2-for-4 with one home run, five RBI, and two runs. Those five RBI gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Graham Virag, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.

Broughton has already played their next game, a 10-0 win against Enloe on the 15th. As for Cardinal Gibbons, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next matchup, an 8-3 defeat against Athens Drive on the 14th.
