Softball Preview: Madison Warhawks vs. San Diego Cavers
Madison and San Diego are an even 3-3 against one another since March of 2017, but likely not for long. The Madison Warhawks will be playing in front of their home fans against the San Diego Cavers at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
Last Thursday, it was a hard-fought matchup, but Madison had to settle for a 6-5 loss against Mission Bay.
Sierra Minshew put in work no matter where she played. On the mound, she tossed five innings while giving up just two earned (and three unearned) runs off five hits. Minshew was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-3.
In other batting news, Savannah Turner made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 3-for-3 with two RBI and a double. Another player making a difference was Sinai Samuela, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-4.
Meanwhile, San Diego scored the most runs they've had all season to find success on Thursday. Everything went their way against La Jolla as San Diego made off with a 16-4 victory. The team's explosion at the plate also rewarded San Diego with their most commanding win of the season.
Like Madison, San Diego also got a great game from a two-way player: Araceli Teran. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out nine over five innings pitched. Teran was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances.
In other batting news, Hanna Patterson and Diana Martinez did most of the damage at the plate: Patterson scored five runs and stole four bases while getting on base in all five of her plate appearances, while Martinez got on base in four of her five plate appearances with six RBI, a triple, and a stolen base. Patterson is trending in the right direction, as she's improved her point production for three straight games. Amanda Villareal was another key contributor, scoring three runs while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances.
Madison now has a losing record at 6-7-1. As for San Diego, their win ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 5-13.
