Softball Game Preview: Maloney Spartans vs. Edwin O. Smith Panthers

Maloney is a perfect 3-0 against Edwin O. Smith since April of 2021 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Wednesday. The Spartans will be playing in front of their home fans against the Panthers at 2:00 p.m.

Maloney blew Tolland out of the water the last time the pair played, but on Monday Tolland got their revenge. The Spartans fell just short of the Eagles by a score of 4-2. Having soared to a lofty ten runs in the game before, the Spartans couldn't push the score so high this time.

Maloney saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Oliviah Garcia-Matyka, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-4. Alaina High-Aresco was another, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one double.

Meanwhile, Edwin O. Smith had just enough and edged out Middletown 12-11 on Monday. The win continues a trend for the Panthers in their matchups with the Blue Dragons: they've now won six in a row.

Olivia Lipps was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 14 batters over seven innings while giving up five earned (and six unearned) runs off 14 hits. Lipps was even better at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI. Those two runs gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, Edwin O. Smith got a massive performance out of Rachael Morales, who scored three runs while going 4-for-4. The team also got some help courtesy of Louise Champage, who went 3-for-5 with three runs, one triple, and one RBI.

Edwin O. Smith now has a winning record of 2-1. As for Maloney, they now have a losing record of 1-2.

Maloney beat Edwin O. Smith 11-6 in their previous matchup back in April of 2023. Will the Spartans repeat their success, or do the Panthers have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
