Team loses in most improbable way.

Richland (North Richland Hills, Texas) opened its season with a loss to Lamar (Arlington, Texas) that was as shocking and bizarre as it was heartbreaking.

After scoring a touchdown to take a one-point lead (its first of the night) with just four minutes remaining, Richland opted to go for two to prevent the possibility of a game-winning Lamar field goal.

The play completely backfired, however, as Reilly Townsend intercepted an errant pass and returned it 90-yards to give Lamar a one-point lead that it would never relinquish.

"We made it interesting, they are a really good football team," Lamar coach Laban DeLay told dfwVarsity. "I’m really proud of the kids and how they played and never gave up."

Richland will look to rebound next week when it takes on Lewisville.
