Baseball Game Preview: Freeman Mavericks vs. Godwin Eagles

The Freeman Mavericks are taking a road trip to challenge the Godwin Eagles at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Freeman's pitching crew has only allowed 3.5 runs per game this season, so Godwin's hitters will have their work cut out for them.

Freeman's usually-dominant pitching crew will be looking to make up for Saturday's struggle, when Collegiate hitters got past them. The Mavericks fell just short of the Cougars by a score of 10-8 on Saturday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Mavericks have suffered since May 3, 2024.

The home team had come away the winner the last seven times Godwin and Maggie Walker had met, but sadly for the fans who attended this one that wasn't the case. The Eagles blew past Maggie Walker 22-2 on Tuesday. The result was nothing new for the Eagles, who have now won four matches by six runs or more so far this season.

Quinton Caraher looked comfortable as he struck out six batters over three innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. Those six strikeouts gave him a new career-high.

On the hitting side, Godwin got a massive performance out of Luke Smyers, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with three runs, one triple, and two RBI. That's the most RBI Smyers has posted since back in March. Hudson Williams was another key player, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with two stolen bases, four RBI, and one run.

Godwin always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .689. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Freeman's loss ended a six-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 9-4. As for Godwin, their record is now 11-2.

Freeman skirted past Godwin 3-1 in their previous matchup back in May of 2024. Will the Mavericks repeat their success, or do the Eagles have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
