Basketball Game Preview: Morenci Wildcats vs. St. Augustine Catholic Wolves

The Morenci Wildcats just played yesterday, but they'll still head out to face the St. Augustine Catholic Wolves at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Morenci has three straight victories, St. Augustine Catholic has three straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the court.

It was a proper cat-fight when Morenci challenged Benson on Wednesday. Morenci enjoyed a cozy 60-42 win over Benson. Given the Wildcats' advantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 88th, while the Bobcats are ranked 269th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Meanwhile, St. Augustine Catholic suffered their biggest defeat since November 26, 2024 on Tuesday. They took a blow against Desert Christian, falling 76-44. The Wolves were down 66-35 at the end of the third quarter, and things only got worse from there.

The match pitted two dominant guards against one another in Carlos Acuna and Tyson Dobbins. Dobbins had a great game and dropped a double-double on 21 points and ten assists. Meanwhile, Acuna was balling out in the loss, going 12 for 25 on his way to 28 points along with eight rebounds and three steals.

Morenci pushed their record up to 15-3 with the victory, which was their sixth straight at home. As for St. Augustine Catholic, their loss dropped their record down to 4-10.

Morenci took their win against St. Augustine Catholic in their previous meeting back in January of 2018 by a conclusive 59-38. The rematch might be a little tougher for Morenci since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
