Basketball Recap: Carolina Day Comes Up Short

Carolina Day was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They took a blow against the Asheville School (Independent) Blues, falling 73-31. While losing is never fun, the Wildcats can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 312th, while the Blues are ranked 38th).

Despite the loss, Carolina Day saw an underclassman step up: freshman Keana Smith dropped a double-double on 15 points and 16 rebounds. Another player making a difference was Layla Hunter, who posted nine points.

Asheville School (Independent)'s win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Alejandra Altares, who went 5 of 7 en route to 12 points along with six boards and three steals. That's the most rebounds Altares has posted since back in November of 2024. Sarah Cutshaw also deserves some recognition as she posted her first block of the season.

Carolina Day's defeat ended a six-game streak of away wins and brought them to 11-5. As for Asheville School (Independent), they pushed their record up to 16-4 with the victory, which was their ninth straight at home dating back to last season.

Carolina Day didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 56-41 win against Lake Lure Classical Academy on the 23rd. As for Asheville School (Independent), they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 67-41 victory against Asheville Christian Academy on the 24th.
