There wasn't a ton of movement in the power rankings this week, but there was certainly enough to keep things interesting. There's a new number one at the head of the rankings as well as a new caboose.
Can't Touch This
Hibriten's 70 - 0 win over Draughn last week had a lot to do with the leadership of senior Mckinley Witherspoon. Witherspoon rushed for 164 yards and three touchdowns. That performance landed Witherspoon among the top power-ranked players for the week.
This Week's Big Showdown
On paper, the match between Northwest Cabarrus (11th in the power rankings) and Central Cabarrus (22nd) looked as though it might be one of the more compelling ones, but things did not play out that way on the field. Northwest Cabarrus scooted by Central Cabarrus with a score of 33 - 13. Northwest Cabarrus saw its record improve to 8-0 and its power rank jump five places as a result.
No Stoppin 'Em
Freedom has been an offensive powerhouse for seven straight weeks after the team lit up the scoreboard again last week. The final score between it and South Caldwell was a 58 - 14 blowout in Freedom's favor. The MaxPreps rankings were spot on as they projected Freedom as the clear winner. At 72 total points, this was the highest scoring power ranking game of the week.
Movin on Up
Rocky Mount managed to bank 274 more yards than its opponent Hunt last week, and going the extra distance paid off. Rocky Mount put the hurt on Hunt with a conclusive 49 - 0 victory. 49 is shaping up to be Rocky Mount's lucky number as the team posted the same point total in its win over Franklinton the game before. Rocky Mount's success was rewarded with a ten-spot boost in the power rankings, the biggest improvement of any team.
