Despite the defeat, Chesapeake had strong showings from Kiery Matkins, who posted 15 points and seven boards, and Allison Schaefer, who scored six points and five rebounds. Matkins is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last five games she's played. Ella Cieri was another key player, putting up 13 points.
Even though they lost, Chesapeake smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in 12 consecutive matchups.
Meanwhile, Arundel was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their 12th straight loss dating back to last season. They came up short against Severn Run, falling 54-34. One positive for the Wildcats, at least, is that this was the most points they've scored all season.
Chesapeake will have to contain Nina Hollingsworth as she made an impact in Arundel's last game. She dropped a double-double on 11 points and 12 boards. The team also got some help courtesy of Imani Monroe, who earned five points.
Chesapeake's defeat was their first in the region, dropping their region record down to 4-1 and their overall record down to 10-2. As for Arundel, their loss dropped their record down to 0-11.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Chesapeake has been crashing the rebounds this season, having averaged 37.1 boards per game. However, it's not like Arundel struggles in that department as they've been averaging 33.4 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Everything came up roses for Chesapeake against Arundel when the teams last played back in January of 2024, as the team secured a 69-31 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Chesapeake since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
