Baseball Recap: Mt. Vernon Starts Season with Victory at Home

Mt. Vernon gave their fans exactly what they wanted out of a home opener on Friday. They never let the Westerville South Wildcats get on the board and left with a 4-0 victory. That's more bragging rights for the Yellowjackets, who also won the pair's last head-to-head.

Kayden Packard was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out seven over six innings pitched. Those seven strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI.

In other pitching news, Camden Firebaugh looked comfortable as he tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs off one hit. What's more, he posted two strikeouts, the most he's had since back in April of 2024.

Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on Ezra Kurek, who went 3-for-4 with two triples, two runs, and one double. Those two triples gave him a new career-high.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Mt. Vernon will face off against Pickerington Central at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Westerville South, they will host Canal Winchester at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
