League recap: Petal tops Natchez to extend winning streak

Petal extended the longest winning streak in 6A Region 3 this week by beating Natchez, 41-20. The victory was the sixth in a row for the team.

Hattiesburg took down Forest Hill 51-20 last week, the largest margin of any game.

Petal's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Larson Barkurn threw for 274 and one touchdown and Jesse Jackson had 124 yards receiving. On the ground Bo Waites chipped in 85 yards. Jamarcus Revies helped Petal's passing attack out by catching five balls for 96 yards.

Forrest Harvey made the biggest impact on defense this week as Marcus Boyles' team defeated the Bulldogs. The 5-foot-8 junior pulled down one interception.

The Panthers' Barkurn and Revies have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Barkurn has thrown for 1266 yards this season, while Revies, a 5-foot-11 receiver, has 39 catches for 605 yards. Jarius Moore from Terry leads the league in rushing with 1051 yards.

The marquee game in the league this week will be the clash between Oak Grove and Brandon. The Warriors comes into the matchup ranked eighth in the state, while the Bulldogs ranks 12th.

Two of the top units in 6A Region 3 will face off this week when Brandon takes on Oak Grove. Brad Peterson's team's offense has recorded 310 points this season, making them No. 1 in the league, while Nevill Barr's team has permitted only 118 on the year.

The Tigers led the league in scoring this week after putting up 51 points on the Patriots.
