Baseball Game Preview: Monroe Vikings vs. Chavez Eagles

The Monroe Vikings are taking a road trip to take on the Chavez Eagles at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Monroe's pitching crew has only allowed 1.9 runs per game this season, so Chavez's hitters will have their work cut out for them.

Monroe easily dispatched Arleta last Monday, but unfortunately both the margin and the ultimate result were a different story in this one. The Vikings fell just short of San Fernando by a score of 4-2 on Saturday. The Vikings' defeat signaled the end of their six-game winning streak.

Meanwhile, Chavez made easy work of Grant on Monday and carried off a 15-1 win. With that victory, the Eagles brought their scoring average up to 6.2 runs per game.

Daniel Zelaya was a standout: he went a perfect 2-for-2 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Joey Uribe, who went 3-for-4 with three runs, one stolen base, and one double.

Chavez always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .536. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their OBP total in three consecutive contests.

Chavez's win bumped their record up to 8-11. As for Monroe, their loss dropped their record down to 19-2.

Monroe got the 'W' in their previous matchup back in February against Chavez by a conclusive 11-1 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Vikings since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
