Mathis has gone 9-1 against George West recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Tuesday. The Pirates will face off against the Longhorns at 6:00 p.m. One thing working in Mathis' favor is that they have posted at least ten runs in their last three contests.
Mathis came out on top against Taft on Friday thanks in part to the team's impressive ten-run fifth inning. The Pirates blew past the Greyhounds 15-0. The Pirates have beaten the Greyhounds the last five times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Greyhounds has come to flipping the script.
Audrey Salinas was a standout: she got on base in all four of her plate appearances with two runs, one triple, and two RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Marivel Martinez, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.
Mathis kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in four consecutive games.
Meanwhile, George West hadn't done well against Odem recently (they were 0-9 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. The Longhorns sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 7-6 win over the Owls. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Longhorns have posted since February 19th.
Kenna Ruiz was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She struck out 11 batters over seven innings while giving up three earned (and three unearned) runs off seven hits (and not a single walk). Those 11 strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in two of her three plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Ellie Colunga, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one double. Lyla Wasicek also deserves some recognition as she hit her first triple of the season.
The win was their first on the road, bumping their record up to 11-8. As for George West, their record is now 11-12.
Everything went Mathis' way against George West in their previous matchup on March 12th, as Mathis made off with an 11-1 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Pirates since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
