Softball Game Preview: McPherson Bullpups vs. Mulvane Wildcats

McPherson is preparing for their first district matchup of the season on Thursday. They will hit the road for the first time this season to challenge the Mulvane Wildcats at 4:00 p.m. McPherson is coming into the contest hot, having won their last three games.

McPherson's hitters will try to repeat the strong performance they gave two weeks ago, when they got past Great Bend's usually-dominant pitching crew. The Bullpups were the clear victors by an 11-5 margin over the Panthers. Fans of the Bullpups have seen this all before: every one of the games they've played this season has ended in a blowout of 6+ runs.

Meanwhile, Mulvane hadn't done well against Andale/Garden Plain recently (they were 1-6 in their previous seven matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Monday. The Wildcats came out on top in a nail-biter against the Indians, sneaking past 12-10. The Wildcats' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.

Regan Witt was incredible, scoring two runs while going 4-for-5. Another player making a difference was Layla Meier, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI and one double.

Witt wasn't the only one making solid contact: Mulvane kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in three consecutive matches.

McPherson pushed their record up to 3-0 with the win, which was their seventh straight at home dating back to last season. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.0 run on average over those games. As for Mulvane, with the win, they broke their three-game losing streak and moved their record to 5-5.

McPherson was able to grind out a solid victory over Mulvane in their previous matchup back in April of 2024, winning 5-0. Will the Bullpups repeat their success, or do the Wildcats have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
