Softball Game Preview: Albemarle Patriots vs. Fluvanna County Flying Flucos

The Albemarle Patriots are headed away from home for the first time to square off against the Fluvanna County Flying Flucos at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. The teams are rolling into the game with opposing streaks: Albemarle has struggled recently with seven defeats in a row, while Fluvanna County will arrive with four straight wins.

Albemarle is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. They fell 8-4 to Spotswood two weeks ago.

Ava Whiteman spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned (and four unearned) runs on eight hits.

On the hitting side, Kaya Thompson made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and scored three runs and stole a base while going 2-for-3. Myah Washington was another key player, going 3-for-4 with one double and one RBI.

While Fluvanna County didn't have the best season last year (they finished 9-12), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They blew past Charlottesville 22-1 on Tuesday. The contest marked the Flying Flucos' most dominant victory of the season so far.

Fluvanna County's win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 4-1. The road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 16.0 runs over those games. As for Albemarle, their loss dropped their record down to 0-4.

Albemarle might still be hurting after the 15-0 defeat they got from Fluvanna County in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. Can the Patriots avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
