Softball Recap: Wilby Wildcats vs. Naugatuck Greyhounds
Wilby extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to 12 on Friday, dropping their season record down to 0-9 in the process. They lost 18-0 to the Naugatuck Greyhounds. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Wildcats of the 19-0 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in May of 2024.
As for Naugatuck, their win bumped their record up to 7-9. Their hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
For Naugatuck's part, Carly Luchina and Leah Chatfield made a big impact no matter where they played. Throwing, Luchina tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Meanwhile, Chatfield struck out seven batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in 13 consecutive appearances. At bat, Luchina went 3-for-4 with four runs, one triple, and two RBI, while Chatfield got on base in three of her four plate appearances with three runs. Those three hits gave Luchina a new career-high.
In other batting news, Amanda Torrens was a standout: she got on base in four of her five plate appearances with five runs and one triple. Those five runs gave her a new career-high. Gianna Bush was another key player, getting on base in all five of her plate appearances with four RBI and two runs.
Coming up, Wilby will head out on the road to take on Kennedy at 3:45 p.m. on Monday. The Eagles have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 10.55 runs per game on average), something the Wildcats will no doubt try to take advantage of.
