Red Mountain and Desert Ridge are an even 5-5 against one another since March of 2016, but likely not for long. The Red Mountain Mountain Lions will square off against the Desert Ridge Jaguars at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Both come into the game bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Red Mountain will bounce into Saturday's matchup after beating Pinnacle, who they had gone 0-6 against in their six prior meetings. Red Mountain walked away with a 6-2 victory over Pinnacle on Tuesday. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Mountain Lions.
Kendall Cochran spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on seven hits and racked up 11 Ks.
At the plate, Chloe Ftizpatrick was incredible, going 2-for-4 with one home run and two runs. The team also got some help courtesy of Nina Montenegro, who went 2-for-4 with one home run and two RBI.
Ftizpatrick wasn't the only one working in the home run department: Red Mountain lost a few balls and finished the game with two home runs. That's the most home runs they've posted since back in April of 2024.
Meanwhile, Desert Ridge had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 11 runs) and they went ahead and made it three on Tuesday. They put the hurt on the Spartans with a sharp 25-0 win. While the Jaguars didn't have the best season last year (they finished 10-21), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.
The team relied heavily on Jersay Overman, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with six RBI, two runs, and one triple. Those three hits gave her a new career-high. Halle Davis also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.
Red Mountain's victory was their seventh straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 2-2-1. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 14.3 runs over those games. As for Desert Ridge, their record now sits at 5-2.
Everything went Red Mountain's way against Desert Ridge when the teams last played back in March of 2024, as Red Mountain made off with a 10-2 win. Does Red Mountain have another victory up their sleeve, or will Desert Ridge turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
