Softball Game Preview: San Diego Cavers vs. Liberty Charter Lions

The San Diego Cavers are taking a road trip to take on the Liberty Charter Lions at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (San Diego has three straight wins, Liberty Charter has seven straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

While San Diego's victory against Francis Parker wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Cavers skirted past the Lancers 9-7.

Diana Martinez made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She struck out seven batters over five innings while giving up three earned (and three unearned) runs off seven hits (and not a single walk). She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing a base while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Juliana Magana, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 3-for-3. Another player making a difference was Madison McNamara, who scored a run and stole three bases while going 1-for-3.

Meanwhile, Liberty Charter scored the most runs they've had this season on Wednesday, but it wasn't enough. They took a 10-6 hit to the loss column at the hands of Santa Fe Christian.

Briza Pelayo was cooking despite her team's loss, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-3. Julia Peterson also deserves some recognition as she brought in her first RBI of the season.

San Diego's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 7-8. Those home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.3 runs over those games. As for Liberty Charter, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-6.

Liberty Charter's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: San Diego has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .526.
