Softball Preview: Berkeley Prep Buccaneers vs. Calvary Christian Warriors

Berkeley Prep is 1-9 against Calvary Christian since March of 2017 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Tuesday. The Berkeley Prep Buccaneers will head out on the road to square off against the Calvary Christian Warriors at 6:00 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

Berkeley Prep is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Wednesday. Their pitcher stepped up to hand McKeel Academy a 9-0 shutout.

Not much got past Avery Powers, who gave up just one hit and racked up ten Ks to keep McKeel Academy off the board. Powers has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't pitched less than six innings in eight consecutive pitching appearances.

On the hitting side, Berkeley Prep let Kaia Cortes and Holland Poe loose on the outfield. Cortes went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI, while Poe went 2-for-3 with a home run and two runs. The team also got some help courtesy of Mackenzie Crerand, who scored two runs while going 2-for-2.

Meanwhile, Calvary Christian had already won ten in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 7.9 runs), and they went ahead and made it 11 on Thursday. They beat the Bulldogs by the very same score they won with in their prior game: 8-0. Give Calvary Christian's pitching crew some credit: that's the team's fourth straight shutout.

Morgen Talley made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and only two hits while striking out nine over seven innings pitched. Talley was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while going 1-for-4.

In other batting news, Irianis Garcia was incredible, going 3-for-4 with four RBI, two runs, and a triple. Another player making a difference was Julia Tamulski, who scored two runs and stole two bases.

Berkeley Prep's record is now 21-7. As for Calvary Christian, their victory was their ninth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 20-5.

The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Berkeley Prep has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.1 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Calvary Christian struggles in that department as they've been averaging 8. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
