Baseball Recap: Downey Drops Highest Score of Season Against Modesto

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Downey). They were the clear victors by a 13-4 margin over the Modesto Panthers on Wednesday. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 11-1 last Monday.

Isaac Doornewaard made a splash while hitting and pitching. He struck out eight batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and only one walk). Doornewaard was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 1-for-3.

In other pitching news, Aidan Cruz looked comfortable as he struck out six batters over four innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off four hits (and not a single walk).

Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on Ryne Moore, who fired off two home runs, four runs, and five RBI while going 5-for-5. He continues to improve, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Jayceon Sloan, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-3.

Downey always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .513. The last time their OBP was this high was back in May of 2024.

The victory made it two in a row for Downey and bumps their season record up to 3-7. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.0 runs over those games. As for Modesto, they are on a seven-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-8-1.

Downey will have a chance to go back-to-back against Modesto: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
