Recap: University Titans vs. Matanzas Pirates
The University Titans's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Wednesday after their eighth straight loss. They took a 78-69 hit to the loss column at the hands of Matanzas. Having run the score up that high, both teams probably have some extra defensive drills coming up.
When it comes to explaining why University lost, one person who can't be blamed is Aidon Amoah. Despite the final result, he dropped a double-double on 26 points and 14 rebounds. Those 26 points set a new season-high mark for him. Gavin Gilmer was another key contributor, scoring 18 points along with eight rebounds.
Matanzas' success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Henry Robinson Jr. led the charge by dropping a double-double on 29 points and 14 rebounds. The matchup was Robinson Jr. 's 14th in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Rya'sir Jefferson , who scored 29 points along with four steals.
University's defeat was their seventh straight at home dating back to last season, which bumped their record down to 1-14. As for Matanzas, the victory was the third in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 6-9.
University won't have much time to rest: their next game is against DeLand at 7:30 p.m. on January 11th. Hopefully DeLand focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up five last Thursday. As for Matanzas, they will take on University Christian at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.
