For the first time this season, Apollo will have a chance to prove themselves in a conference matchup. They will head out on the road to face off against the West Point Dragons at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Apollo is coming into the match on a four-game losing streak.
Apollo saw some tournament action last Wednesday. They lost 15-3 to San Leandro.
Ana Palacio was cooking despite her team's loss, going a perfect 2-for-2 with three RBI.
Meanwhile, West Point made easy work of Skyline on Thursday and carried off an 18-3 win. Considering the Dragons have won five contests by more than five runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.
Angelique Chavez made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowed only one hit over four innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one hit in three consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI.
In other batting news, Gabby Rodiguez was a standout: she scored three runs and stole five bases while going 3-for-3. With that strong performance, she is now averaging an impressive 1.1 stolen bases per game. Zerianna Gomez was another key player, going 2-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple.
West Point always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .633. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Skyline only posted an OBP of .235.
The victory got West Point back to even at 6-6. As for Apollo, their loss dropped their record down to 1-4.
Tuesday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Apollo hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .383. However, it's not like West Point struggles in that department as they've averaged .407. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Apollo came out on top in a nail-biter against West Point in their previous matchup back in April of 2022, sneaking past 6-5. Will Apollo repeat their success, or does West Point has a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
