League recap: Clearwater Central Catholic tops Lemon Bay to extend winning streak

Clearwater Central Catholic extended the longest winning streak in 3A District 5 this week by beating Lemon Bay, 23-0. The victory was the seventh in a row for the Marauders.

St. Petersburg Catholic's dynamic duo of Jack Sheehan and Markqus Ruppell proved tough for Evangelical Christian to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Sheehan threw for 284 yards and two touchdowns and Ruppell had 206 yards receiving. Tony Jones helped St. Petersburg Catholic's passing attack out by catching three balls for 38 yards.

Diquan Walker was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 12 carries, he ran for 86 yards as Clearwater Central Catholic fell to the Sentinels. Teammate Domenic James added to the ground attack by rushing for 49 yards.

Berkeley Prep's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Buccaneers feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Brad Mayes has thrown for 1031 yards and 10 touchdowns this season, while Bubba Olivera has 21 catches for 567 yards. Chris Williams leads the league in rushing with 900 yards.

Berkeley Prep's Williams needs only 100 yards against Tampa Catholic next week to surpass 1,000 rushing yards for the season.

Two of the top units in 3A District 5 will face off this week when St. Petersburg Catholic takes on John Davis' team. Steve Dudley's team's offense has scored 233 points this season, good for No. 1 in the league, while the Marauders have allowed only 71 on the year.

A big matchup in the league this week will be when the Crusaders take on the Buccaneers. Tampa Catholic is currently in second, while Berkeley Prep is in third.

There should be lots of points scored when Clearwater Central Catholic and the Barons face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, the Marauders comes in having scored 222 this season, while St. Petersburg Catholic has scored 233. Clearwater Central Catholic scored 23 points last week as it bested the Manta Rays.

The Barons fell 30-27 to Evangelical Christian in the closest game of the week. Sheehan was a bright spot for St. Petersburg Catholic, as he ran for nine yards in the loss.
