Basketball Recap: Sam Rayburn Comes Up Short

Sam Rayburn was not able to break out of their rough patch on Saturday as the team picked up their seventh straight loss. They took a hard 50-34 fall against the Alvin Yellowjackets. Sadly, that's the second time they've come up short against the Texans this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 27-21 back in December of 2024.

Despite the defeat, Sam Rayburn saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Estefani Mejia went 8 for 13 en route to 18 points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Mejia has scored all season.

Leading Alvin to victory were Hayden Holloway and Cheyenne Lang. Holloway dropped a double-double on 11 points and 17 rebounds, while Lang posted 16 points and four steals. Those 17 boards gave Holloway a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Lyla Garza, who had eight points in addition to seven rebounds and four steals.

Sam Rayburn's loss dropped their record down to 1-22. As for Alvin, their victory ended a nine-game drought at home and bumped them up to 9-22.

Coincidentally, the two teams will both be playing Manvel the next time they take the court. Sam Rayburn will host Manvel at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, while Alvin will head out to face them at 1:00 p.m. on February 1st.
