League recap: Holtville tops Escondido Charter to extend winning streak

Holtville extended the longest winning streak in Manzanita this week by beating Escondido Charter, 32-21. The victory was the fourth in a row for the team.

Calipatria moved up to 845 from 875 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. A 47-0 win over San Luis helped the Hornets improve their standing.

Spencer George and Spencer George gave Foothills Christian a balanced attack through the air and ground last week. George threw for 93 yards and two touchdowns, while George ran for 171 yards. Teammate Kyle Moberg added to the ground attack by rushing for 91 yards.

Steven Drye provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Holtville bested the White Tigers. He completed nine passes for 144 yards and one touchdown and also ran for 122 yards. Drye's favorite target this week was David Lucero, who caught five passes for 95 yards.

5-foot-11 quarterback Evan Franklin of Calipatria is the league leader in passing yards this season with 401. He has also thrown four touchdowns. On the ground, the Knights' George has rushed for 489 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Lucero. The Holtville star has 12 catches for 218 yards.

A big matchup in Manzanita this week will be when David Shaw's team takes on Mountain Empire. The Hornets are currently in second, while the Red Hawks are in fourth.

There should be lots of points scored when Calipatria and Mountain Empire face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, the Hornets comes in having scored 110 this season, while Bill Dobson's team has scored 144. Calipatria scored 47 points last week as it defeated the Sidewinders.

The Hornets took down San Luis 47-0 last week, the largest margin of any game.
