Heritage Christian is 0-10 against Roncalli since May of 2018 but things could change on Thursday. The Eagles will face off against the Royals at 6:00 p.m. Heritage Christian is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.5 runs per game this season.
Heritage Christian took a seven-run defeat the last time they faced off against Guerin Catholic, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Eagles came out on top in a nail-biter against the Golden Eagles on Tuesday, sneaking past 6-4. The game was the first time the Eagles have beaten the Golden Eagles on their field since April 25, 2022.
Tripp Vaughan tossed a big game, tossing six innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off eight hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Heritage Christian let Alex Jackson and Luke Strege run wild. Jackson went 1-for-4 with one home run and one stolen base, while Strege went 2-for-4 with three RBI, one run, and one double. That's the most hits Strege has posted since April 5th. Another player making a difference was Eli Strege, who went 2-for-4 with two runs.
Meanwhile, Roncalli was able to grind out a solid win over Cincinnati Christian on Saturday, taking the game 4-1. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Royals.
Nico Amodeo and Andrew McHugh dominated on the mound. Amodeo tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits, while McHugh tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits.
At the plate, Roncalli saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Rudy Schoettle, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base and one run. Will Manship was another, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one RBI.
Heritage Christian has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-3 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.9 runs on average over those games. As for Roncalli, their win was their sixth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 12-3.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Thursday. Heritage Christian hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.5 home runs per game. However, it's not like Roncalli struggles in that department as they've been averaging 0.4 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Heritage Christian suffered a grim 11-1 defeat to Roncalli when the teams last played on April 10th. Can the Eagles avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
