See the Bel Air high JV team turn an unusual 5-3-6 triple play

Eleven days ago, the Pittsburgh Pirates turned the first 4-5-4 triple play in Major League Baseball history. Turns out they weren't the first ones this month to turn a unique play that netted three outs.

The Bel Air ( Md.) JV baseball team beat them to the point in a May 1 game: A 5-3-6 triple play.

It definitely qualifies as wacky. A ground ball to third base by a North Harford batter was gobbled up by Brody Cullison and he immediately tagged the runner coming towards him. That's one out.

Cullison then fired to first base to retire the batter. That's two outs.

Then came the cherry on top. As the out was recorded at first base, another North Harford runner rounded second base and charged for third. First baseman Craig Wood threw to third with shortstop Cole Slembecker covering and they got the tag to complete the play. That's three outs.

Tthe play has been done before. According to Baseball-almanac.com, it has happened three times in professional baseball, with the last one occurring on July 28, 1906 when the New York Yankees did it to the Cleveland Naps.

"I think I knew to get to third because I've been taught shortstop my entire life and my dad was a professional shortstop. At first when the play was happening It was kind of surreal how everything fell perfectly into place for our team and you could just hear screams of joy from our team and parents. I had to tell everyone how the play unfolded when I had gotten home and went to school the next day," Slembecker said in an email.
