Baseball Recap: Nine Straight Road Wins for Blacksburg

Blacksburg hadn't done well against Christiansburg recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. The Bruins put the hurt on the Blue Demons with a sharp 7-1 victory. That result was just more of the same for these two, as the Bruins also won the last time the pair played back in May of 2024.

Sam Szefc spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned run on five hits and racked up 12 Ks. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Max Matthews, who went 11-for-4 with one run and one RBI. Those 11 hits gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Brice Abbott, who got on base in all three of his plate appearances with two runs and one double.

Blacksburg always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .750. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Blacksburg's win was their ninth straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 10-2. The road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.8 runs over those games. As for Christiansburg, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 7-5.

Coincidentally, Blacksburg and Christiansburg will both be playing Patrick Henry the next time they take the field. The Bruins will host the Patriots at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, while the Blue Demons will host them at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
