Baseball Recap: Troy Takes a Loss

Troy and North Star squared off in some playoff action on Saturday, but Troy had to settle for second. They fell just short of the Huskies by a score of 7-6. The Trojans were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Huskies earlier this season, when they won 12-11.

Dominic Holden was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. He struck out 11 batters over 5.2 innings while giving up three earned (and three unearned) runs off six hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in eight consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and three runs. Troy is 10-3 when Holden posts two or more runs, but 4-7 otherwise.

In other batting news, Makhi Durrett made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went a perfect 3-for-3 with two triples, two runs, and one stolen base. He is becoming a predictor of Troy's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 11-2 (and 3-8 when he doesn't).

Troy has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 14-10 record this season. As for North Star, their record now sits at 18-3.

While Troy had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair will be back at it again later today.
