Baseball Recap: Saturday's Victory Is Calhoun's Sixth in Last Eight Outings

Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but only Calhoun walked away with it. They were the clear victors by an 8-2 margin over the Needville Bluejays on Saturday. This was a revenge game for the Sandcrabs: when they faced off against the Bluejays on Thursday, they had to take a 6-1 loss.

Demetrio Rodriguez spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned runs on five hits and racked up six Ks. He has been consistent: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in six consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Ricky Martinez, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base. He is becoming a predictor of Calhoun's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 2-0-1 (and 13-14 when he doesn't). Ethen Ramirez also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.

Calhoun is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last eight contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 15-14-1 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.1 runs on average over those games. As for Needville, their defeat dropped their record down to 17-10.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: Calhoun beat the Bluejays by a score of 9-4 later that day.
