Softball Preview: Modesto Panthers vs. Pitman Pride

Modesto and Pitman are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2021, but likely not for long. The Modesto Panthers are taking a road trip to face off against the Pitman Pride at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. Modesto will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more runs each match than the last.

The home team had come away the winner the last three times Modesto and Downey had met, but sadly for the fans who attended this one that wasn't the case. Modesto blew past Downey 22-4 on Tuesday. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest win the Panthers have posted against the Knights since May 5, 2022.

Alyssa Ramirez made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over four innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off six hits (and only one walk). That's the most strikeouts she has posted over her last five games. She was even better at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three runs, four RBI, and two doubles.

In other batting news, Modesto got a massive performance out of Sonia Padilla, who went 3-for-5 with three runs, three doubles, and four RBI. Those three doubles gave Padilla a new career-high. Alma Perez Gutierrez also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen bases of the season.

Modesto always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .674. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their OBP total in three consecutive contests.

Pitman not only won on Saturday, but they posted their biggest win since April 30, 2024. They were the clear victor by a 15-4 margin over Riverbank. The Pride haven't had any issues with the Bruins recently, as the game was their third consecutive victory against them.

Like Modesto, Pitman also got a great game from a two-way player: Kaylee Fuller. On the mound, she tossed three innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. Fuller was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring three runs and stealing Three bases. while going 1-for-2. With that strong performance, she is now averaging an impressive 1.2 stolen bases per game.

In other batting news, Pitman let Ivy Butler and Peyton Avena run wild. Butler scored three runs and stole Two bases. while going 2-for-4, while Avena went 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI. Butler is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Lexi Pulido, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-1.

The win got Pitman back to even at 3-3. As for Modesto, their victory ended a nine-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 3-8.

Pitman's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Modesto has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9.6 hits per game. It's a different story for Pitman, though, as they've been averaging 10 hits. Given Modesto's sizable advantage in that area, Pitman will need to find a way to close that gap.

Modesto beat Pitman 7-4 when the teams last played back in April of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for Modesto since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
