Basketball Recap: Reese Gustin's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Pine View over Kanab

Pine View lost against Kanab back in December of 2023 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Pine View Panthers took a 47-40 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Kanab Cowboys. While losing is never fun, the Panthers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Utah basketball rankings (they are ranked 37th, while the Cowboys are ranked fourth).

Several Panthers players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Reese Gustin, who posted 11 points and four steals. Gustin is crushing it when it comes to steals: she's grabbed at least two every time she's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Ella Fiefia, who earned six points and five rebounds.

Rylee Little was her usual excellent self, going 6 of 11 on her way to 16 points along with five boards and four steals for Kanab. That's the most steals Little has posted since back in November of 2023. Emilie Gilberg was another key player, putting up seven points and three steals.

This is the second loss in a row for Pine View and nudges their season record down to 2-2. As for Kanab, they pushed their record up to 4-1 with the victory, which was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season.

Pine View wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next matchup, a 63-48 win against Emery on the 7th. As for Kanab, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 55-48 victory against Draper APA on the 7th.
